Another benefit of knowing your credit history would be finding any errors on your credit report. This would include unauthorized use of your name or account information, i.e., Identity Theft. The law entitles you to correct mistakes. You may write to the credit bureau (Experian, etc.) showing the error, explaining why you think your information or activity is inaccurate. Credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate your claim, notify you of the results, and delete inaccurate or unverifiable information. If you disagree with the investigation results, you can write a dispute statement to appear in your credit file.
